HTCC 1st XI Vrs Wadham 14th May 2006

Match Report
by Alex Bell
It was a cold grim day at the
Holtwhites Trinibis Oval when I lost
the toss having agreed to a timed
game. With youth on our side I was
confident that we could pull off
our first victory of the season!
Kyal B-B opened the bowling with
a very tight and tidy spell which
was just as well really as Big
Uncle Tone was finding it difficult to
get his rhythm right coming up
the hill. This lead to Jack Tarling
being introduced from the bottom
end. Jack bowled an excellent spell
and did me a huge favour as all
the bowlers on show preferred the top
end (as does Big Uncle Tone).
Jack was unlucky when 2 easy chances
went down off his bowling (no
names mentioned). It turned out these
were the first of many!
They were going at about 5 runs
an over so in an attempt to reduce
this I brought myself on in order
to try and get the pinch hitters
out. Ty replaced Kyal at the top
end and he too struggled with his
rhythm he was, understandably,
probably quite stiff having bowled 16
overs the day before {And a top
spell of bowling it was on Saturday! ED}.
Thanks to a cracking catch by Big
Uncle Tone
in the gully we got the wickets
that we needed to reduce the run rate
and Liam was brought into the
attack. Liam bowled really well
getting his first wicket of the
season with the first ball he bowled
and later in the spell another
one thanks to good bowling with good
keeping by taffy. Jack then
replaced Ty at the top end and was
unlucky not to get a wicket or
two. The Wadham number 6 entered into
the game and proceeded to hit a
quickfire 50 using so many lives that
he probably made even Blighter
jealous!!! They eventually declared
on 232 for 7 or 8 (I think… sorry
doing this from memory) at 5:00.
Half an hour was taken for tea
when I would have preferred 20 minutes
given the amount of time they had
left us. It turned out that we
would have had 33 overs at a rate
of 7 runs per over. Enter Blighter
and Taffy. With time against us
we needed a good start this was
achieved by Taffy who managed to
outscore Blighter until strangely
they were both on 69 (I shan't
repeat the question of the day that
Taffy asked Blighter). The most
impressive part about this
partnership was that neither of
them panicked and it was paced
amazingly well. Unfortunately
Wadham didn't really understand the
concept of the timed game and as
a result had a handful of players on
the boundary within just a few
overs. This meant that unless a poor
shot was played then they
wouldn't get us out. Taffy was out in the
70's (can't remember how many
exactly{78 - ED}) and Kyal B-B came to the
crease. Paul then hit 2 sixes in
consecutive deliveries by advancing
down the track to their quickie
{who bowled and looked, remarkably like an old Fidel Edwards -ED}
and we were back up with the rate.
Kyal nurdled the ball around
feeding the strike to Blighter…
excellent stuff. We managed to
win with an over and 2 balls to spare
when Kyal hit a four when we
needed 3 to win. Paul scoring his
second hundred of the season. A
truly excellent performance from
Taffy, Blighter and Kyal it was a
pleasure to watch.
Just as a sideline. Upon
inspection of their book they had scored
incorrectly and only awarded
themselves 4 runs on wides (of which
there were plenty) that had gone
for 4 instead of 5 (this meant that
any other runs that might have
been added in this way were probably
missed too). Still their
declaration took this into account.
Lessons Learned: Fielding
practice tomorrow night for all the first
team. No excuses other than death
will be accepted!! Only joking
but I'd like to see as many
people as possible there tomorrow at 6:30
(watch this space as there might
be a colts match and it may be
rearranged).
I will try and do a report
although it might prove difficult with
being busy at work.
