Ken Silver: 19??-2001

It is with great sadness that I write of Ken Silver's passing. Ken was a great servant of our cricket club, both in playing terms and in devoting time and energy behind the scenes.

In cricketing terms his career bowling figures speak for themselves;

Overs Maidens Runs Wickets Average
K.Silver 9729 2598 24881 1567 15.88

 Although I haven't his career batting figures to hand yet (I will post them to this site as soon as I have them), I'm sure they will make interesting reading! Ever the optimist, Ken's style of batting (as I remember), frequently involved shepherding/shielding the rest of the tail for many overs, facing the last ball of the match, with one wicket left, needing to defend this ball for an honourable draw, however he would try to hit this last ball for the 40 needed to win, over deep cow corner and getting horribly bowled -thus disasterously losing the match!

This batting style was typical of Ken. In fact Ken was unique in many things he did and was quite a character - now that is an understatement! If you ever had met Ken Silver, you could never forget him! I will not talk of such things within this article,but for an insight to Ken Silver's character, have a read of the upcoming article, 'Ken Silver - The Enigma.????'

I would like to finish with a mention of Ken the Captain. I cannot think of higher praise to give someone as a club captain, than when people say, 'when we were kids, he looked after us', or 'he always gave us our chance'. Many people who I have talked to, who played under Ken, in their formative years in the 3rd XI, had similar comments and I can say for certain that this was also true in my case. One of the main roles of the 3rd team skipper in any club, is to bring on the kids from the colt section and give them their chance to establish themselves in the world of senior cricket and I think Ken Silver did a very good job of that in his time.
